New sitcom coming from the creator of My Name is Earl

by Wendy on December 4th, 2006

This actually sounds pretty good:

US network CBS has given My Name is Earl creator Greg Garcia the go-ahead to produce a new sitcom pilot titled Fugly, a slang term meaning "very ugly".

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the pilot follows three unattractive siblings from North Carolina - identical twin sisters and a brother - who combine their inheritance money to buy one of the sisters an extreme makeover. The trio then relocates to Hollywood to try to profit from her new-found good looks.

"What I love about the show is that it’s about a family that’s always been on the outside looking in, watching other people being successful," Garcia told the Hollywood Reporter. "They ultimately decide that they need to be beautiful to achieve their dreams."

Fugly was originally pitched to the Fox network in 2003 as a potential vehicle for Pamela Anderson, but the deal fell through when Anderson opted to star in the sitcom Stacked instead. Fox also turned down My Name is Earl, which was later picked up by NBC.

Garcia won an Emmy Award in 2006 for penning My Name is Earl’s pilot episode.
