Looks like it’s going to be a good one!

Forget Al Gore. Scratch David Suzuki. And Leonardo Di Who? Earl (Jason Lee) is the environment’s best hope.

He has reached number 26 on his list of sins and sets out to atone for stealing an air-conditioner from dope-head Woody (Christian Slater doing stoned very convincingly, perhaps because he’s naturally squinty).

Now living in a dung hut in an eco-friendly commune, Woody refuses to accept the appliance back and instead challenges Earl and Randy to "unplug from the grid" for a week. Turns out that white trash can become green. Maybe it’s down to eating "beetloaf" for seven days, but Earl is so swayed by the plight of the planet that he vows to heal it.

Cue totally apt soundtrack choice of Big Yellow Taxi (thankfully the Joni Mitchell version, not the naff Counting Crows cover) as Earl thinks globally. The task of compensating for ex-wife Joy’s (Jaime Pressly) earth-hurtin’ ways proves overwhelming and the cute moral of the episode is to think smaller.

Meanwhile, a herbal remedy lapped up by Randy (Ethan Suplee) has him seeing everything in claymation ( Celebrity Deathmatch-style). The difference between live-action and cartoon Joy is barely discernible. Bless her.

]]> My Name Is Earl, the NBC comedy about a guy who tries to make up for his previous misdeeds thanks to a newfound belief in karma, is now available on iTunes. Season 2 episodes are available for the standard $1.99 each, or you can buy a season pass for $36.99. (And yes, that includes the "Jump For Joy" episode .)

Earl is one of relatively few comedies featured on the iTunes Store that is made by a production company other than one owned by the network it airs on. These shows have traditionally faced more difficulties and "red tape" in being added to the store, although NBC’s Scrubs also overcame this hurdle. Since The Office and 30 Rock are also available on iTunes, this also marks the first time that NBC’s entire current lineup of Thursday-night comedies is available on iTunes.

]]> Yay! Here’s some spoilers for a few upcoming My Name is Earl episodes:

The February 8th Episode, title ‘Blow’, again addresses Joy’s legal problems. This has been an overarching plot on My Name is Earl for some time now, and while not as huge as the Randy/Catalina conundrum that was addressed in the February 1st Episode of My Name is Earl, Foreign Exchange Student, it is still one Earl fan’s would love to see put to bed.

In a highly improbable coincidence (it wouldn’t be My Name is Earl without one!), Earl tackles making good on a bit of identity theft only to find out the woman he victimized is Joy’s long last sister. Seems Joy could use some help from a familial presence to invoke some sympathy from the court. The problem is Liberty and Joy already know each other – and are sworn enemies. Can Earl right the wrong and convince Liberty to give Joy a hand?

On February 15th will be ‘The Birthday Party" and February 22nd the very interestingly titled ‘Guess Who’s Coming out of Joy’.

Yay!

NBC has ordered early full-season pickups for the 2007-08 season for four hit series — the comedies "The Office" and "My Name Is Earl," and dramas "Heroes" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, " it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment.

"These four series represent some of the best of what we consider to be the ‘NBC brand’ of quality shows," said Reilly. "It is a pleasure to give them an early renewal to develop more stories for next year since we know they will remain both critical and commercial successes for a long time to come."

In its inaugural season last year, the show received the People’s Choice Award, two Television Critics Awards, a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Emmys for executive producers Greg Garcia and Marc Buckland for writing and directing, respectively.

NBC has been looking for its next big laffer, and it may have found it in “The Office.”

The cubicle comedy, which has been building in buzz and audience, hit a season high last week — even though it largely remains off the radar of adults 35 and over.

For the season, according to Nielsen, “The Office” is television’s No. 4 half-hour comedy in adults 18-49 (4.2 average), pulling to within half a ratings point of leader “Two and a Half Men” on CBS and just behind Fox’s “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.”

Its 5.0 demo rating last week is the second best score to date for the third-season skein, which struggled initially but has gradually built an aud airing alongside “My Name Is Earl” since the fall of 2005.

The two make for the strongest hour of sitcoms today, helping NBC remain competitive on a night when CBS and ABC both air their No. 1 programs. “Earl,” too, deserves credit, opening the night very well.

While the nets have tried numerous single-camera comedies in recent years, only “The Office” and skedmate “Earl” have really broken through.

And not surprisingly, the oft-quirky shooting style hasn’t been as easily embraced by those viewers who grew up with comedies filmed on a soundstage with a laugh track.

In fact, if “The Office” is going to become the next “Seinfeld,” it will need to add more adults 35-plus.

On average, “The Office” at 8:30 has built on its “My Name Is Earl” lead-in by 5% in adults 18-49. But looking at both halves of this demo, you can see just how young “The Office” skews.

While “The Office” is performing a whole ratings point better than “Earl” among the 18-34 crowd (4.6 vs. 3.6), and outdelivers “Earl” in teens (2.0 vs. 1.7), it underperforms “Earl” in 35-49 (3.7 vs. 4.5).

“The Office,” like “Earl,” is also a strong performer among men, averaging a 14 share in men 18-49 last week and an 11 share in women 18-49. This testosterone tilt has come in handy on the night, as ABC’s competing comedy hit “Ugly Betty” is a big draw among femmes.

NBC’s biggest comedies in recent years — “Friends” and “Will & Grace” — relied on heavy female viewership, but it just may be that for the net’s next big half-hour, it will be the men leading the way.

]]> I’m not totally sure, but I think this might be a first:

ABC’s breakout hit of the season “Ugly Betty” dipped to 11,6 million viewers, while NBC’s critically-acclaimed comedies “My Name Is Earl” and “The Office” won the 8pm hour in the 18-49 demo.

With the rest of the ABC line-up in repeats, viewers may not have realized the network aired an all-new episode of “Ugly Betty” last night. Hopefully the numbers will perk up next week.

“Earl” opened the evening for NBC with over 10 million viewers, beating CBS’s CSI rerun in the 18-49 demo (4.3 vs. 3.5).
